Villanovafranca is a Marmilla village at three hundred metres on the border with the Trexenta, in an area inhabited from nuragic to Byzantine times. Its most important monument is the Su Mulinu nuraghe, a multi-towered complex where an unusual stone altar shaped like a nuraghe, linked to a lunar cult, was found; the finds are in the village museum. The hills are planted with wheat, almonds and saffron: with San Gavino Monreale and Turri it is one of the centres of PDO Sardinian saffron. The village has the Baroque-influenced parish church of San Lorenzo and the little church of San Sebastiano, called Sa Cresiedda. In May the almond festival offers sweets made by the village women.
