Villamar is a Marmilla village, anciently called Mara Arbarei, inhabited since the late Neolithic and grown from a Punic-Roman settlement around today's church of San Pietro. Its territory holds many nuraghi, some reused in Punic times, and a Punic-Roman necropolis. The village keeps mud-brick courtyard houses and 19th-century mansions. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista, Romanesque in origin, holds the large retable by Pietro Cavaro from 1518, one of the masterpieces of 16th-century Sardinian painting. The village is also known for its murals, begun in the 1970s. On 1 October the feast of Santa Vitalia parades riders in costume and decorated ox carts, and San Sebastiano is celebrated in January.
