Where to pick it up
The main companies are at Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero airports; some budget firms are off-airport with a shuttle. Same-airport pick-up and drop-off is cheaper.
When to book
For July and August book well ahead: cars sell out and prices rise sharply. A small car is almost always enough and easier in villages and beach car parks.
What to check
- Damage and theft cover and the excess.
- Fuel policy: full-to-full is best.
- Dirt roads, often excluded from insurance: many beaches are reached on unpaved tracks.
- Ferries: taking a hire car to La Maddalena or Carloforte may need permission.
