Getting around Sardinia

Scenic roads, few trains and buses that go everywhere but not often: how to plan your journeys.

By car

The easiest way to explore. The main road is the SS131 dual carriageway from Cagliari to Sassari and Porto Torres, with a branch to Nuoro and Olbia; there are no toll motorways. Coastal and mountain roads are slow and winding, so allow extra time.

  • Cagliari to Olbiaabout 3 h 30
  • Cagliari to Algheroabout 2 h 45
  • Olbia to Algheroabout 2 h
  • Cagliari to Villasimiusabout 1 h
  • Olbia to Cala Gononeabout 1 h 30

By bus

ARST buses connect almost every village, with more frequent services between the main towns and to the beaches in summer. On Sundays and out of season services are greatly reduced.

By train

Regional trains link Cagliari with Oristano, Sassari, Olbia, Iglesias and Carbonia. In summer the scenic Trenino Verde runs on narrow-gauge lines through the interior.

Smaller islands

Frequent ferries from Palau to La Maddalena, from Portovesme and Calasetta to Carloforte, and from Stintino and Porto Torres to Asinara.
