Culture and history

An island at the centre of the Mediterranean that has kept its language, rituals and landscapes.

The Sardinian language

Sardinian is a Romance language in its own right, considered the closest to Latin. Its main varieties are Logudorese and Campidanese; Catalan is spoken in Alghero, a Ligurian dialect in Carloforte and Calasetta, while Gallurese and Sassarese are close to Corsican.

Crafts

Hand-woven rugs with geometric patterns, filigree gold jewellery, cork, baskets and the knives of Pattada and Arbus: Sardinian crafts are alive and make great souvenirs.

Nature

Sardinia has animals found nowhere else: the Sardinian deer, the wild horses of the Giara, the white donkeys of Asinara, mouflon in the mountains and flamingos in the lagoons.
