Tuili is a Marmilla village at two hundred metres at the south-western foot of the Giara di Gesturi and one of its main gateways: from the village you climb onto the basalt plateau of the wild ponies, cork oaks and paulis, the seasonal ponds. The area was inhabited since pre-nuragic times, as shown by obsidian workshops, and holds nuraghi and the remains of a Roman settlement with olive presses. The old centre has two-storey stone houses with loggias and courtyards behind monumental gates. The 15th-century Gothic-Catalan parish church of San Pietro holds the retable of the Master of Castelsardo, painted around 1500, one of the masterpieces of Sardinian Renaissance painting. In the 19th century the Asquer family made Tuili a modern farming centre, and their villa can now be visited. In January the Sant'Antonio bonfire is lit in front of the church, and the faithful read omens for the harvest in its flames.
