Urzulei is an Ogliastra village at five hundred metres on the eastern edge of the Supramonte, with one of Sardinia's wildest territories. It includes part of the Gorropu gorge, one of Europe's deepest canyons, and the upper Codula di Luna, the long valley running down to Cala Luna beach. The limestone plateau of the Supramonte of Urzulei is full of caves, sinkholes and ancient holm oak forests, with the Oddai menhir, the Panzale cave and many nuraghi, some on mountain tops. It is a destination for experienced hikers, ideally with a local guide. The old centre keeps large multi-storey stone houses around the 17th-century parish church of San Giovanni Battista. On 18 June the feast of San Basilio Magno at the country chapel lasts three days.
