Arzana is Ogliastra's highest village, at almost seven hundred metres, and its huge territory reaches the summit of the Gennargentu, Punta La Marmora. Of medieval origin, it belonged to the Giudicato of Cagliari and the Ogliastra district.
Among woods and plateaus lie rock-cut tombs, Roman remains and many nuraghi, including Ruinas, one of the highest on the island. In the village the neoclassical parish church of San Giovanni Battista was designed by Gaetano Cima and built in 1860-1865. Like all of Ogliastra, Arzana is known for the longevity of its people.
