Nuoro and Barbagia

Sardinia's ancient, mountainous heart: murals, archaic masks, canyons and coves reachable only on foot or by boat.

Nuoro is the home town of Nobel laureate Grazia Deledda. From here you enter the Barbagia, the most traditional part of the island: the murals of Orgosolo and the masked Mamuthones of Mamoiada.

To the east the Supramonte drops to the sea: boats leave Cala Gonone for Cala Luna, while on foot you can cross the Su Gorropu gorge, one of Europe's deepest canyons.
