Ulassai

Ulassai is a municipality in the Province of Ogliastra with about 1,517 inhabitants, 775 metres above sea level.

Ulassai is an Ogliastra village at almost eight hundred metres, picturesquely set against the limestone tacchi, the great sheer walls that tower over it and draw climbers from all over Europe. It is the home of Maria Lai, one of Italy's greatest 20th-century artists: in 1981, with Legarsi alla montagna, she tied the village's houses to the mountain with a blue ribbon, and the Stazione dell'Arte, in the old railway station, houses her works. The old centre keeps multi-storey stone houses around the parish church of Sant'Antioco from 1503. Nearby are the Su Marmuri cave, one of Sardinia's largest and most spectacular, and the Lequarci and Lecorci waterfalls, and the area has many nuraghi. Santa Barbara is celebrated at the mountain chapel on the third Sunday of May.
