Gairo is an Ogliastra village at almost seven hundred metres, rebuilt after the terrible flood of 1951 made the old centre uninhabitable: Gairo Vecchio, its abandoned houses clinging to the slope, is now a striking ghost village. Many people moved lower down to Gairo Sant'Elena and towards the sea, where Cardedu was born. The territory runs from mountains to coast and includes Perda Liana, one of the island's most spectacular limestone peaks, and the Trenino Verde station at Gairo Taquisara. In August the feast of San Lussorio ends with a great open-air banquet.
