Gesturi is the village of the Giara, the great basalt plateau rising above the Marmilla, covered in cork oaks and dotted with seasonal ponds, the paulis, where wild horses roam free. It is one of Sardinia's most evocative natural places, best explored on foot or by bike. The village keeps an old centre of large stone houses with loggia and courtyard, and it is the birthplace of Blessed Fra Nicola da Gesturi, the begging friar much loved in Cagliari, remembered with a feast in August. At the entrance to the village, on the road to the Giara, stands the 16th-century church of Santa Maria Egiziaca.
