Sarule

Sarule is a municipality in the Province of Nuoro with about 1,770 inhabitants, 626 metres above sea level.

Sarule is a village in the Nuoro area at over six hundred metres, at the foot of Monte Gonare, on whose summit, above a thousand metres, stands the sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Gonare, one of the best loved in central Sardinia, with views over much of the island. In early September thousands of pilgrims climb to the sanctuary for the novena and feast. Sarule is known for its rugs, still woven by hand on upright looms. The old centre has large stone houses along winding lanes, with the parish church of San Michele, and the area holds the Binzales rock-cut tombs and many nuraghi. On the Tuesday after Easter the feast of Santa Lucia, the patron, ends with horseback acrobatics and a poetry contest.
