Orotelli is a village between the Nuoro area and the Marghine, with the hamlets of Oddini and Santo Spirito, medieval in origin in an area rich in nuraghi. It has an upper old town and a lower, more modern part. In the upper part stands the Romanesque church of San Giovanni Battista, from the 12th century, for some decades the seat of the diocese later moved to Ottana. Orotelli is known for its Carnival with the thurpos, masks with blackened faces and wool hoods representing men under the yoke, alongside s'eritaiu, the hedgehog hunter: ancient fertility rites that end with the priors' supper of boiled mutton and cheese.
