Ollolai is one of Barbagia's highest villages, at over nine hundred metres, and by tradition the capital of the Barbaricini, the inland people who resisted Romans and Byzantines; in the Middle Ages it gave its name to the whole Barbagia di Ollolai. The village has the 16th-century Gothic-Catalan church of San Bartolomeo, and above a thousand metres near Punta S'Assisorgiu stands a country chapel with immense views over Barbagia. In June the feasts of San Giovanni and San Pietro feature a procession of horsemen in costume, s'inghiriu, and on 24 August the great feast of San Bartolomeo is held.
