Gavoi is a Barbagia village at almost eight hundred metres, laid out like an amphitheatre on a slope, with one of the finest old centres of granite houses inland. Below it lies Lake Gusana among holm oak and cork woods, great for walks and canoeing. Gavoi is famous for Fiore Sardo, the shepherds' pecorino, and for the Isola delle Storie literary festival, which in July brings writers from around the world into its squares and courtyards. At Carnival the drummers, sos tumbarinos, parade, and near the chapel of Nostra Signora d'Itria stands the Serra Istelate menhir, almost four metres tall.
