Samugheo is a Mandrolisai village known throughout Sardinia for weaving: its rugs, tapestries and blankets with traditional motifs are among the island's most prized, and MURATS, the regional museum of Sardinian textile art, tells their story. The area is rich in nuragic sites, with many nuraghi and giants' tombs such as S'Altare de Su Scudu, and rock-cut tombs; after the Carthaginian conquest a fortified wall was built here, perhaps linked to the nearby Medusa fortress. The old centre keeps stone houses with frames carved by local stonemasons and the Gothic-Aragonese parish church of San Sebastiano. At Carnival the Mamutzones appear, archaic masks with horns and cowbells.
