Samatzai

Samatzai is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari with about 1,720 inhabitants, 162 metres above sea level.

Samatzai is a village between the Campidano and the Trexenta, in the Middle Ages in the Nuraminis district of the Giudicato of Cagliari, in an area rich in prehistoric remains, including menhirs of various types. Near the village stands the multi-towered Domu is Abis nuraghe, also called Su Nuraxi, whose central tower is still imposing. The village has the 16th-century Gothic-Catalan parish church of San Giovanni Battista and the 17th-century church of Santa Barbara. On 2 February Candlemas is organised by the Rosary confraternity with an ancient ceremonial.
