Ploaghe

Ploaghe is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Sassari with about 4,653 inhabitants, 425 metres above sea level.

Ploaghe is a Logudoro village north-east of Sassari, heir to Roman Plubium, and in the Middle Ages the seat of a diocese. It was the birthplace of Canon Giovanni Spano, the father of Sardinian archaeology and a scholar of the language, who left the village a collection of artworks shown in the parish picture gallery. The area holds rock-cut tombs and dozens of nuraghi, and a few kilometres away, on the border with Codrongianos, stands the basilica of Saccargia. In the village are the parish church of San Pietro and the late Gothic church of San Timoteo. On 15 August Ploaghe holds its own Candelieri procession, like Sassari and Nulvi.
