Fonni

Fonni is a municipality in the Province of Nuoro with about 4,062 inhabitants, 1000 metres above sea level.

Fonni is Sardinia's highest village, at a thousand metres on the slopes of the Gennargentu among woods and pastures. It probably grew from the Roman post of Sorabile and expanded in the early Middle Ages around the Canio quarter. In winter it is Sardinia's snow destination, with the Bruncu Spina slopes. Its main monument is the 17th-century basilica of the Madonna dei Martiri, with a large square and pilgrims' houses. The area has rock-cut tombs, menhirs and nuraghi. At Carnival the Urthos and Buttudos masks come out, and June brings the Madonna dei Martiri and San Giovanni, the festival of flowers.
