Ghilarza is the main town of the Guilcier, between the Abbasanta plateau and Lake Omodeo, with an old centre of red trachyte houses. Antonio Gramsci spent his childhood and youth here, and his house on the main square is now a museum of documents and objects from his life. In town you can see the Aragonese tower, the Romanesque church of San Palmerio and the 13th-century church of San Giorgio, and on the lakeshore stands the little church of Santa Serafina. At Carnival floats and masks parade, and in January the Sant'Antonio bonfire is lit.
