Bonarcado is a village at the foot of the Montiferru, linked to one of medieval Sardinia's great abbeys. Byzantine monks lived here from the 7th century, and in the 12th century the Camaldolese founded the monastery of Santa Maria, whose condaghe, a register of its estates, is one of the oldest texts in Sardinian. Above the Romanesque church stands the small cross-shaped sanctuary of the Madonna di Bonacatu, of Byzantine origin, scene in mid-September of one of the island's oldest Marian feasts.
