Austis, at over seven hundred metres between the Mandrolisai and Barbagia, owes its name to the emperor Augustus: it began as a Roman military post, Augustis, built to control raids by the Barbaricini. The land was inhabited much earlier, as its nuraghi show, above all the nuragic village of S'Urbale, whose excavations yielded a wealth of everyday objects.
In the village the main monument is the parish church of the Assunta, from 1567. Shepherd traditions live on in the feast of Sant'Antonio di Basiloccu, held by the shepherds at the country chapel on the third Sunday of September.
