Tonara is a Mandrolisai village at nine hundred metres on the slopes of the Gennargentu, formed in the 16th century from the quarters of Arasulè, Toneri and Teliseri, among chestnut, hazel and holm-oak woods. It is the home of Sardinian nougat, made by hand with honey, almonds, hazelnuts and egg white, and of cowbells forged by local craftsmen. Tonara is the village of the poet Peppino Mereu, whose verses became folk songs. The old centre has stone houses and the bell tower of 1607, all that remains of the original church. From nearby Punta Muggianeddu there are views over much of Sardinia. On the second Sunday of July the nougat festival, with the golden cowbell contest, draws visitors from all over the island.
