Alà dei Sardi is a mountain village at over 650 metres on the granite plateau between Monte Acuto and Gallura, surrounded by cork and holm oak woods. Its name appears in the Middle Ages, when it belonged to the Giudicato of Torres; until 1864 it was simply called Alà.
Cork working developed here in the 19th century and is still important. The area is rich in ancient sites: several nuraghi, giants' tombs, the megaron temple of Sos Nurattolos and the nuragic sanctuary of Pedrighinosu. In the village are the parish church of the Nativity of Mary, built in 1619, and the 18th-century church of San Giovanni Battista.
