Villasalto

Villasalto is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari with about 1,127 inhabitants, 502 metres above sea level.

Villasalto is a Gerrei village at five hundred metres between the Sarrabus mountains and the Flumendosa valley, in an area inhabited since pre-nuragic times and considered one of the zones where nuragic civilisation held out longest. Its territory holds the Su Suergiu mine, one of Italy's main antimony mines, closed in the 1960s; the restored buildings house the Mining Museum. The village keeps multi-storey stone houses around the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo, formerly dedicated to Santa Barbara, patron of miners. Sant'Antonio and San Sebastiano are celebrated with bonfires in January, and on the first Sunday of June a procession carries the saint's statue to her chapel.
