San Nicolò Gerrei

San Nicolò Gerrei is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari with about 846 inhabitants, 365 metres above sea level.

San Nicolò Gerrei is a Gerrei village of Roman origin, called Pauli Gerrei in the Middle Ages. Its name is tied to a famous find: at Santu Iacci, near the village, a bronze base was discovered with a trilingual inscription in Punic, Latin and Greek dedicated to the god Eshmun Merre, one of the most precious records of ancient Sardinia. A nuragic well temple and a rectangular building stand on the same site. The old centre keeps large courtyard houses with stone gateways and the 17th-century parish church of San Nicola di Bari. The feast of Santa Lucia, on the third Sunday of September, takes place at the country church.
