Silius

Silius is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari with about 1,271 inhabitants, 565 metres above sea level.

Silius is a Gerrei village at over five hundred metres, medieval in origin in the Giudicato of Cagliari, known in the 20th century for its fluorite mine, one of the most important in Europe. Not far from the village are the ruins of Sassai castle, also called Orgoglioso, built by the judges of Cagliari on a height. The village has the 16th-century parish church of Saints Felicita and Perpetua, rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the area has rock-cut tombs and a few nuraghi. The San Sebastiano bonfire is lit on 20 January, and the patron saints are celebrated on the second Monday of June.
