Ballao

Ballao is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari with about 877 inhabitants, 90 metres above sea level.

Ballao is a Gerrei village where the Flumendosa meets the Flumineddu, in a green valley of citrus groves and oleanders. It probably grew from a Roman post built to protect the local mines, an activity revived in the 19th century at Corti Rosas.

A few kilometres away on the road to Escalaplano lies the sacred spring of Funtana Coberta, a nuragic well with a vestibule and twelve steps down to its domed chamber. In the village the 16th-century Gothic-Aragonese parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena is worth a look.
