Burcei is the mountain village closest to Cagliari, at almost 650 metres in the Sarrabus mountains below Punta Serpeddì. It is fairly recent, founded after 1647 around a spring when the Marquis of Quirra sold this land to a Cagliari merchant. Burcei is famous for its cherries, celebrated every early summer with a festival, and for the woods and rocks around it. In the centre the parish church of Santa Maria di Monserrato, rebuilt in the late 19th century to a design by Gaetano Cima, hosts the main feast on 8 September.
