Villaputzu

Villaputzu is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari with about 4,836 inhabitants, 8 metres above sea level.

Villaputzu is a Sarrabus village at the mouth of the Flumendosa, Sardinia's second river, with a long coastline of beaches and dunes towards Porto Corallo and the Salto di Quirra. The area was inhabited until the 7th century in the Roman settlement of Sarcapos and has many nuraghi; in the 19th century its hills hosted mines. The old centre keeps mud-brick houses with courtyards and large stone gateways, and the parish church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria. On the coast lies the marina of Porto Corallo with its Spanish tower, and to the south-east stand the Romanesque church of San Nicola di Quirra, built of red brick, rare in Sardinia, and the ruins of Quirra castle. Villaputzu is one of the homelands of the launeddas, celebrated in summer with a Sardinian dance festival, and Saints Vittoria and Narciso are honoured in October.
