Castiadas is one of Sardinia's youngest municipalities: until the 19th century it was a stretch of woods and marshes south of the Flumendosa, until in 1875 the state set up an agricultural penal colony where prisoners reclaimed the land. The municipality was only created in the mid-1980s, and the old colony buildings can still be visited. Today Castiadas is above all about the sea, with Cala Pira, Cala Sinzias and part of Costa Rei, all white sand and turquoise water. A little further north, towards Capo Ferrato, stand a Spanish tower and the Cuili Piras menhirs.
