Villaperuccio is a small Sulcis village, an independent municipality since 1979, in the valley between Santadi and Narcao, in an area inhabited from the Neolithic to Roman times. Near the village are many menhirs and the remains of a large Ozieri-culture village. The most famous site is the Montessu necropolis, one of Sardinia's largest and most spectacular: some forty rock-cut tombs carved into the volcanic rock of a natural amphitheatre, some with large entrances and relief decorations of bull's horns. The village has the early 20th-century parish church of the Beata Vergine del Rosario. A well-known festival of poetry contests in Campidanese Sardinian is held in June, and the patron is celebrated on 22 August.
