South-western Sardinia is mining country: tunnels, ore-washing plants and mining villages are now part of a geo-mining park. The most spectacular is Porto Flavia, a port carved into a cliff facing the Pan di Zucchero sea stack.
Offshore lie Sant'Antioco, linked by a causeway, and San Pietro with the Ligurian-founded town of Carloforte. Beaches such as Porto Pino and Cala Domestica are among the least crowded on the island.
