Masainas is a small lower Sulcis village that grew in the late 17th and early 18th centuries from the furriadroxius, the scattered farmhouses of the peasants who resettled the region; it was long part of Giba before becoming a municipality. Its territory reaches the sea with a short stretch of coast towards Porto Pino and has several nuraghi. The village has the parish church of San Giovanni Battista, celebrated on 24 June, and the Madonna della Salute is honoured in early October.
