Tratalias is a small Sulcis village which in the Middle Ages took in people from nearby Sulci fleeing Arab raids and became the seat of the Sulcis diocese. Its cathedral, Santa Maria di Monserrato, built between 1213 and 1282, is one of the most important Romanesque churches in southern Sardinia, with three aisles and a trachyte façade. The old village around the church was abandoned in the 1980s because of water seepage from the nearby Monte Pranu reservoir, and its restored houses now host craft workshops and events. The feast of Santa Maria di Monserrato, on the Sunday after Ascension, is by tradition the oldest in Sardinia.
