Villanova Monteleone is a Logudoro village at almost six hundred metres on the hills between Alghero and the Meilogu, in a large territory of pastures, woods and plateaus overlooking the sea. Tradition says it was founded after the destruction of Monteleone castle in 1436. The village has a strong tradition of improvised poetry in Sardinian and of crafts. The Gothic-Catalan parish church of San Leonardo di Limoges dates from the 16th century, and a few kilometres away on the road to Montresta stands the 17th-century church of Nostra Signora di Interrios with its large churchyard. The area holds the Puttu Codinu rock-cut tombs, many nuraghi, Lake Temo and Monte Minerva. The patron San Leonardo is celebrated on 11 June and 6 September, and July is full of events.
