Ittiri

Ittiri is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Sassari with about 8,868 inhabitants, 400 metres above sea level.

Ittiri is one of the largest towns of the Coros, on a plateau at four hundred metres between Sassari and Alghero, surrounded by olive groves and artichoke fields. Probably Roman in origin, it was effectively held by the Malaspina in the Middle Ages. The area is very rich in prehistoric remains: the Sa Iddazza menhirs and the Sa Figu rock-cut tombs, among the most important for their wall decoration. Just outside town stands the Romanesque church of Nostra Signora di Coros, and to the west lies Lake Cuga. In the centre is the 15th-century parish church of San Pietro in Vincoli.
