Usellus

Usellus is a municipality in the Province of Oristano with about 854 inhabitants, 289 metres above sea level.

Usellus is a small Alta Marmilla village at the foot of Monte Arci, heir to Roman Uselis: founded in the late Republican period, it became Colonia Iulia Augusta Uselis, one of the few Roman colonies in Sardinia, on the slopes of the Donigala hill. In the Middle Ages it gave its name to the Parte Usellus district of the Giudicato of Arborea and was the seat of a diocese, later moved to Ales. The old centre keeps houses with loggias on the courtyard and stone gateways. The parish church of San Bartolomeo is still called the cathedral in memory of the old diocese, and just outside the village stands the Romanesque church of Santa Reparata. The area has many nuraghi, including that of Santa Lucia.
