Uras is a Campidano village at the foot of Monte Arci on the road between Cagliari and Oristano, probably grown from a Roman settlement. On its plain in 1470 Leonardo Alagon, Marquis of Oristano, defeated the army of Viceroy Nicolò Carroz, in one of the last Sardinian victories against the Crown of Aragon. The area has many nuraghi, including Domu Beccia, the old house, an imposing multi-towered nuraghe. The old centre keeps mud-brick houses with loggias on the courtyard and the parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena, rebuilt between 1664 and 1719 by local master builders. The most distinctive feast is San Salvatore on the Tuesday after Easter, linked to the memory of the battle, with a procession carrying the saint's statue to his chapel.
