Desulo is one of Sardinia's highest villages, at almost nine hundred metres on the slopes of the Gennargentu, formed by three quarters: Issirìa, Ovolaccio and Asuai. It is famous for its traditional costume, one of the island's most colourful, in bright red with embroidery, still worn by older women. For centuries its people were shepherds and travelling sellers of chestnuts, walnuts and wooden goods across the island. Desulo was the birthplace of the poet Antioco Casula, known as Montanaru, remembered in a house museum, and its Bruncu Nuraghe stands above 1,300 metres.
