San Gavino Monreale

San Gavino Monreale is a municipality in the Province of Medio Campidano with about 8,894 inhabitants, 54 metres above sea level.

San Gavino Monreale is a Medio Campidano town that grew around the church of San Gavino in the medieval village of Nurazzeddu. In the late 19th century the Montevecchio company built a large lead smelter here, turning the town into an industrial centre. San Gavino is Sardinia's saffron capital: its fields, together with those of Turri and Villanovafranca, produce PDO Sardinian saffron, and in November the saffron festival celebrates the flower harvest. The town keeps a few mud-brick courtyard houses and several historic churches, and its Carnival is one of the liveliest in the Campidano.
