San Giovanni Suergiu is a Sulcis village between Carbonia and Sant'Antioco, grown from the medieval village of Palmas de Sols, itself built on a Roman settlement; the municipality moved to the present village in the late 19th century. Its finest monument is the 12th-century Romanesque church of Santa Maria di Palmas, alone in a clearing by the Rio Palmas. The area holds the Ozieri-culture rock-cut tombs of Is Loccis Santus and some nuraghi, and at the hamlet of Matzaccara lie the ruins of a Punic and Roman settlement. Along the coast are the lagoons and beaches of Porto Botte, with flamingos. The Madonna delle Grazie is celebrated in July.
