Bosa is one of Sardinia's most beautiful towns: the colourful houses of Sa Costa climb from the Temo river to the 12th-century Malaspina castle, whose chapel holds 14th-century frescoes. It is one of the few Sardinian towns on a navigable river, and the old tanneries, Sas Conzas, still line the bank. Phoenician in origin, then Punic and Roman, the town moved below the castle in the Middle Ages. Bosa is home to Malvasia wine and a lively satirical carnival, and on the first Sunday of August the Madonna del Mare sails up the Temo in a procession of boats.
