Sindia

Sindia is a municipality in the Province of Nuoro with about 1,811 inhabitants, 510 metres above sea level.

Sindia is a Planargia village at over five hundred metres on the plateau between Macomer and Bosa, in an area very rich in nuraghi. Just outside the village are the remains of the Cistercian abbey of Santa Maria di Corte, founded in the 12th century by monks from Clairvaux, the first Cistercian house in Sardinia. The old centre has multi-storey stone houses, some turned into small mansions in the 19th century, and the Romanesque parish church of San Pietro, built by the same craftsmen as the abbey. Sindia is known for its cheeses. The feast of San Raffaele, on the third Sunday after Easter, lasts three days with costume parades and riders, and San Demetrio is celebrated on 17 October.
