San Sperate is Sardinia's museum village: since 1968, at the initiative of the sculptor Pinuccio Sciola, house walls have been whitewashed and painted with hundreds of murals and the streets filled with sculptures. The village has Sciola's Sound Garden, with stones that ring when touched. Its territory, inhabited since prehistory, includes the site of Piscina 'e Ortu, with a Middle Bronze Age village and necropolis. The heart of the old centre is the Gothic-Catalan church of San Sperate, built where tradition places the saint's tomb. San Sperate is also famous for its peaches and fruit, celebrated with a festival in July.
