Uta

Uta is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari with about 7,859 inhabitants, 6 metres above sea level.

Uta is a Campidano village about twenty kilometres from Cagliari, on the edge of the plain towards the Sulcis mountains, inhabited without interruption since pre-nuragic times. Its most important monument is the 12th-century Romanesque church of Santa Maria, built by the Victorine monks of Marseille, with a pale stone façade decorated with small arches and carvings of animals and figures, one of the finest in southern Sardinia. The old centre keeps mud-brick houses with loggias and a 16th-century Gothic-Aragonese parish church. On the mountains to the south lies the WWF Monte Arcosu reserve, one of the most important for the Sardinian deer. In May the feast of Sant'Isidoro parades the traccas, decorated ox carts, and Santa Lucia is celebrated after mid-August.
