Monastir

Monastir is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Cagliari with about 4,505 inhabitants, 83 metres above sea level.

Monastir is a Campidano village about twenty kilometres from Cagliari, probably founded in Byzantine times around a monastery, hence its name. Its old centre keeps typical Campidano mud-brick houses with loggia and large courtyard. On Monte Olladiri, the hill above the village, a Monte Claro culture village has been uncovered, important for understanding Sardinian prehistory. In January the village celebrates Sant'Antonio Abate and San Sebastiano, and in August the country feast of Santa Lucia culminates in a solemn procession.
