Orosei

Orosei is a municipality in the Province of Nuoro with about 6,794 inhabitants, 19 metres above sea level.

Orosei is a Baronia town at the mouth of the Cedrino, on the large gulf that bears its name, with the hamlets of Sos Alinos, Cala Liberotto and Sas Linnas Siccas. It stands on the site of ancient Fanum Carisii and in the early Middle Ages became an important walled town. The old centre keeps traces of the fortified village in the Palattos Betzos quarter around the tower, the only remnant of the castle, and many churches, including domed San Giacomo and the Rimedio sanctuary with its pilgrims' lodgings. The area is famous for its marble and a long coast of beaches and coves from Cala Liberotto to Bidderosa. In January the Sant'Antonio bonfire is built around a tall pole from Epiphany onwards, and Nostra Signora del Rimedio is celebrated on the second Sunday of September.
