Lula is a village at over five hundred metres at the foot of Monte Albo, between the Baronia and the Nuoro area. It is famous across Sardinia for the country sanctuary of San Francesco, said to have been built by a repentant Nuoro bandit: in the first nine days of May a heartfelt novena is held there, with communal meals for thousands of pilgrims. The area has the limestone nuraghe Lithu Ertiches, a rock-cut tomb carved into pink rock and the old Sos Enattos mine, now a candidate site for the Einstein Telescope, a major gravitational-wave observatory. The 15th-century parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore stands in the village.
